What to visit in Arras for a week-end?
The charming squares of Arras
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Arras Squares are our real treasure. Completely destroyed during the First World War, they were rebuilt identically by the population from collective memory. You will discover unusual details, charming little corners and especially the bars and restaurants of the city.
The belfry and the cellars («boves») of Arras
Did you know ? Almost all houses on the two squares have a cellar. Each of them communicate with that of the neighbor. Part of the basements of the city of Arras can be visited. A circuit Underground has been converted to the tourist visit in the old quarries of chalk. Go discover «the underground history» of Arras … At the beginning, place of extraction of stones, these boves become «cellars, warehouses for the merchants of places, then shelter for the population of Arras during the Second world war».
Go to the belfry and buy tickets inside at the Office of tourism
Wellington tunnels (Memorial of the battle of Arras)
Visual projections on the chalk walls and audio-guided tour immerse the visitor in the intimacy of the historic site. The quarry, baptized “Wellington” by New Zealand soldiers, preserves the memory of these thousands of soldiers confined underground for months, before launching on the battlefield on April 9, 1917, to attack by surprise the positions German. A visit that will allow you to better understand the Battle of Arras and the challenges of the fighting in the North of France.
A drink with friends on the terrace
The two Arras Squares (namely the « Place des héros » and the « Grand Place ») are great for having a drink on the terrace. The two squares communicate with each other and are lined with nice restaurants and café bars. The animation reigns there even late at night in summer. “Take the time to really live “, that is the slogan of our city …
Exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts
The Museum of Fine Arts Arras has a partnership with the Palace of Versailles. Regularly, big exhibitions are organized on different themes (carriages of kings, the Treaty from Versailles). Discover the history of Arras with the permanent collections as well as the Saint-Vaast abbey building, also to admire.
Palais St Vaast 22 Rue Paul Doumer, 62000 Arras – Tel. +33 3 21 71 26 43

Strolling on the trails and cycle routes in the countryside
The Arras countryside is charming. Follow the historic path of Via Francigena which links Canterbury to Rome (old Gallo-Roman way). Explore the memory cycle route that links many of the First World War sites. Venture into pretty villages like those of Mont-Saint-Eloi or Acq to meet old stones, craftsmen and local producers.
